Formation Groups

* "Spiritual formation is a
rather general term referring
to all attempts, means,
instructions, and disciplines
intended towards deepening of
faith and furtherance of
spiritual growth. It includes
educational endeavors as well
as the more intimate and in-depth
process of spiritual direction."

Might a spiritual formation* group

be right for you?

  • are you hungry for more in your spiritual life?
  • do you wonder how you might better hear God's voice?
  • do you desire companionship in your spiritual journey?
A spiritual formation group is meant to encourage one's intention toward God and awareness of His graceful work in one's life.

As our purpose is formation more than information the group sessions are largely experiential. An example of a session might be as follows: begin with time for prayer followed by reflection and sharing on the assigned reading. The leader will facilitate thoughtful reflection more than offer specific information. Reading and written reflection come from a variety of contemporary books, and are often augmented by various readings from spiritual classics.

Still Waters Staff or Leadership Team members will provide leadership of spiritual formation groups. Some examples of themes looked at in the past include:
  • Boundaries (Cloud & Townsend)
  • Spiritual companionship
  • Introduction to Spiritual Formation
  • Dallas Willard’s Renovation of the Heart: Putting on the Character of Christ
  • Discernment
  • David Benner’s trilogy: Surrender to Love, The Gift of Being Yourself, Desiring God’s Will
  • The Enneagram
  • M. Robert Mulholland’s Shaped By the Word: The power of Scripture in spiritual formation
